Zelenskyy Reaches Turkey, Putin Declines to Join – Will Peace Still Be Possible?
In a major diplomatic moment, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has reached Istanbul, Turkey, for long-awaited peace talks aimed at ending the devastating Russia-Ukraine war. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has declined to attend, raising doubts about the success of the negotiations.

Zelenskyy expressed his willingness to meet Putin face-to-face and stated that if the Russian President does not attend, it would mean he is not serious about ending the war. Despite earlier proposing unconditional talks, Putin has instead sent a delegation led by aide Vladimir Medinsky, along with Deputy Defence Minister Alexander Fomin and military intelligence chief Igor Kostyukov.
What’s at Stake Globally?
These peace talks, hosted in Istanbul, have drawn worldwide attention. They could decide the future of Europe, control inflation driven by energy prices, and even influence global political relations.
The war has disrupted oil, gas, and wheat exports, affecting prices and supplies in countries like India, which heavily relies on imported energy and food grains.
Adding to the political weight of the talks, former U.S. President Donald Trump is in Saudi Arabia and has shown interest in getting involved. The U.S. Secretary of State is also expected to attend the session, marking strong global engagement.
Impact on India
India has maintained neutral diplomatic relations with both Russia and Ukraine. A breakthrough in talks could help bring stability to energy markets, reduce fuel prices in India, and ease inflation.
Furthermore, peace could help restore international trade and tourism, which are important for Indian businesses, students, and job seekers abroad.
Will Talks Work Without Putin?
Putin’s absence from the talks is being seen as a major setback. Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has criticized the decision, saying that real progress can only happen if both top leaders speak directly.
Still, Russia claims it is serious about peace, and its delegation will participate actively. Whether that leads to a meaningful agreement remains uncertain.
Experts warn that without a direct conversation between Putin and Zelenskyy, the talks may result in only partial progress. However, this could still be a foundation for future dialogue.
The world now waits to see whether this diplomatic effort will be a turning point—or just another missed chance.
