Massive UPI Outage Affects India: Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm Users Experience Transaction Failures

Several hundred users in India encountered UPI payment issues on Saturday as widely used apps such as Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm witnessed massive outages. The bug resulted in failed transactions and login issues, leading to user frustration while making routine digital payments.

In a significant disruption to digital payments in India, users reported large-scale failures in Unified Payments Interface (UPI) transactions on Saturday morning. Popular apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm were impacted, with hundreds of users unable to make payments, transfers, or even log into the apps.

Complaints started to surge around 11:00 AM, with Downdetector noting a spike in complaints. The platform indicated that more than 80% of users reported payment failures, while others experienced login issues and app crashes.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), the body that oversees the UPI infrastructure, stated the outage occurred and blamed it on “intermittent technical issues” in the system. NPCI assured that technical teams were working intensively to provide normalcy.

“We are aware of the problems affecting UPI transactions and are looking into it. Services should normalize soon,” the NPCI said in a short statement.

It is not the first instance of such issues being faced by UPI users. A similar kind of outage was experienced just a few weeks back on March 26, which affected tens of thousands of users across the country and raised questions about the reliability of India’s rapidly expanding digital payment ecosystem.

Several agitated users complained on social media, particularly since the outage had affected critical purchases, travel bookings, and merchant transactions.
