Forests Are Our Lungs: Vice President Highlights Importance of Sustainability

India’s Vice President, Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, recently visited the College of Forestry in Sirsi, Karnataka. There, he delivered a powerful message on the importance of environmental conservation, calling forests the “lungs of the nation.” He said, “If a country’s forests are healthy, its people are healthy too.”

Why Is the Environment Important in Today’s Life?

In today’s fast-paced world, we often ignore nature while focusing on development. However, the environment plays a crucial role in our daily lives. Clean air, safe drinking water, fertile soil, and stable weather patterns all depend on a healthy ecosystem.

Forests are not just home to wildlife. They:

  • Absorb carbon dioxide, helping fight climate change

  • Support tribal and rural livelihoods

  • Prevent soil erosion and floods

  • Keep our air and water clean

Hence, protecting nature is not just about saving trees—it’s about saving ourselves.

The Vice President’s Message to India

During his speech, Shri Dhankhar reminded everyone of India’s Vedic heritage, which teaches us to live in harmony with nature. He urged students, educators, and citizens to take collective responsibility for protecting the environment.

He also planted saplings in memory of his mother under the campaign “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (One Tree in Mother’s Name), promoting emotional connection with nature.

“Let’s pledge today—to plant trees, reduce waste, save water, and educate others. Together, we can make a difference,” he said.
