Andre Russell Becomes First Overseas Player to Score 1000 IPL Runs at Eden Gardens

Andre Russell Creates IPL History at Eden Gardens

Kolkata: In a record-breaking moment during IPL 2025, Andre Russell of Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) has become the first overseas player to score 1,000 runs at Eden Gardens, one of India’s most iconic cricket stadiums.

This historic milestone came during a high-voltage match against the Rajasthan Royals on May 4, 2025, where Russell remained unbeaten with a fiery 57 runs off just 25 balls. His innings included four boundaries and six sixes, thrilling fans at the packed Eden Gardens.

A Feat Never Achieved Before

So far, only two other players—Gautam Gambhir (1,407 runs) and Robin Uthappa (1,159 runs)—have scored more than 1,000 IPL runs at Eden Gardens. But Russell is the only non-Indian player to join this elite list.

Since joining KKR in 2014, Russell has been one of the team’s biggest match-winners. With his power-hitting and calm under pressure, he has played a key role in many memorable victories for Kolkata.

Performance That Lifted KKR

Thanks to Russell’s explosive knock, KKR posted a strong total of 206 runs. His innings not only brought up a personal milestone but also boosted his team’s chances in the tournament.

Eden Gardens has long been Russell’s favorite hunting ground, and this latest record proves it once again.

Why This Rule Was Introduced

Indian Railways took this step to:

  • Avoid overcrowding in reserved coaches

  • Make travel more comfortable for passengers with confirmed tickets

  • Maintain better hygiene, security, and order in trains

Moreover, this change supports digital enforcement and encourages passengers to plan their journey in advance.
