A new study has uncovered a surprising health risk lurking in your morning routine-the coffee from your office machine might be quietly raising your bad cholesterol (LDL) levels.
Printed in the Nutrition, Metabolism & Cardiovascular Diseases magazine, the study by researchers at Uppsala University and Chalmers University of Technology examined coffee makers in Swedish offices. They discovered that most brewers, particularly those that utilize metal mesh filters, permit two cholesterol-increasing substances—cafestol and kahweol—to pass into your beverage.
“People believe they’re merely drinking coffee, but they could be drinking trouble,” said one of the authors.

Why it matters:
- LDL cholesterol is a major contributor to heart disease.
- Unfiltered coffee (common in espresso machines and some pods) allows harmful compounds to pass through.
- Paper filters, used in traditional drip brewers, block most cholesterol-raising elements.
The study suggests switching to coffee brewed with paper filters, especially if you’re drinking multiple cups a day. For coffee lovers who are also health-conscious, this small change could be a big step toward heart health.
