Beware of Adulterated Watermelons This Summer: Safety Tips Every Consumer Must Know
As summer sets in, so does the soaring demand for refreshing fruits like watermelon and muskmelon. Alongside this seasonal demand comes an increase in adulteration. Recently, the Food Safety Department conducted inspections and seized over 2,000 kg of substandard watermelons, many of which were either chemically enhanced for color or beginning to rot. These melons were promptly destroyed and removed from the market.

How to Detect Adulterated Watermelons at Home
To help consumers avoid harmful fruits, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) recommends the following simple tests:
✅ Cotton Ball Test
Cut the watermelon and rub a cotton ball on the red flesh.
If the cotton remains clean: It’s natural.
If it turns red: Artificial color has been used.
✅ Tissue or Paper Rub
Rub a white tissue on the red part.
Color transfer indicates the presence of dyes and adulteration.
✅ Water Test
Put a chopped piece into a glass of water.
If the water changes color, artificial color has likely been added.
How to Choose a Naturally Ripe Watermelon
Follow these expert-backed tips while buying watermelons:
Check the Shape: Look for a symmetrical, evenly shaped melon.
Inspect the Rind: Deep green skin with dark stripes is ideal.
Belly Spot: A creamy yellow or golden spot means natural ripening.
Thumping Test: Tap it — a ripe melon gives a deep, hollow sound.
Weight Check: Heavier melons usually contain more juice.
Watch for Damage: Avoid fruits with bite marks or rodent exposure.
